Tom Nicon’s fatal fall poses more questions about fashion and its victims

Milan men’s fashion week draws to a close tomorrow after the suspected suicide of a leading model, just months after the death of designer Alexander McQueen raised questions about the pressure of the industry.

The suspected suicide in Milan of leading male model Tom Nicon last Friday, was the latest in a list of recent suicide attempts by some of the industry’s top names, prompting questions about the stress placed on high-profile models and designers.

Nicon, 22, a French model who worked for Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Hugo Boss, fell to his death from a fourth floor apartment after returning from a Versace catwalk rehearsal. Read more

What happened at the menswear shows?

Wednesday was menswear day at London fashion week – or MAN day, as Topshop prefers to call it. Somehow Fashion Statement can’t read that without adopting its best Lord of the Rings voice: “Welcome to the day of MAN, children of the earth, for soon, their time will be past …” Anyway, if yesterday is any guide, the future for menswear will involve leather studded collars (isn’t that Orc-wear rather than menswear?), metallic boiler suits and fishnet socks. What do you mean, that sounds ridiculous? Have you seen what we women have to put up with? Read more

Famous actor Kevin Costner with hits like Fields of Dreams and The Untouchables may have the solution to cleaning up the oil spill in the gulf. Kevin and his brother have apparently invented some sort of machine, which may be able to separate oil from water.

Mr. Coster did not go into the technical details on how this machine is able to what British Petroleum could not do for close to a month now. Mr. Costner went on to say that he has some thirty one of these machines and that they can be had, if British Petroleum would ask for them.Mr. Costner said that he came up with the idea and paid for the idea to become the machine that separates oil from water when he lived on the coast; Costner said because he witnessed so many spills… that he thought it would be an excellent idea to invent a machine to combat spills. At this juncture, why not try Costner’s invention – Costner is not one of those celebrities who are publicity, seeking, hounds nor is he known for pulling pranks, ala Howard Stern. Read more
